Ani Lorak (real name Karolina Kuek) was born in the town of Kytsman of the Chernivtsi Region, Ukraine. Her father graduated from a music school majoring as a choir conductor, and later from the Philology Department of the Chernivtsi University. Her mother was educated in the Institute of Culture and worked as a radio announcer. Karolina developed the desire to become a singer as early as at the age of four. At that time she had already decided what she wanted to achieve in life. Karolina often performed at various school vocal competitions.In 1992, she took part in the popular contest Pervotsvit and was the winner. It was here where she met her ex-producer Yuriy Falyosa. As a result, at the age of 14 she signed her first professional contract. Karolina became known as Ani Lorak in March 1995. Her new stage name was born in the Morning Star show in Moscow. There was already another Russian singer with the name Karolina enrolled in the competition, so Karolina saved the situation by having read her name backwards, and that's how her present stage name Ani Lorak has come into existence. Ani Lorak has been repeatedly recognised as the Singer of the Year in Ukraine. Her credits include two solo shows on the country’s central stage, ten albums, one single, a biographical film, and 23 video clips. Ani was runner up in the Ukrainian selection for the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest which was held in Kyiv. According to the results of polls by popular magazines, Ani Lorak has been voted the most beautiful and sexy woman of Ukraine. Ani has also enjoyed success as an actress and isthe producer of her own brand. She owns the Angel-Lounge restaurant in the centre of Kyiv and is heavily involved with work on charitable activities. UNICEF and UNO in Ukraine have awarded a commendation to Ani Lorak for assistance and help to HIV positive citizens of Ukraine as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on HIV/AIDS in Ukraine. Ani Lorak has represented Ukraine on the global music market and she has performed on stages in England, the United States of America, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Turkey to date, and has no intentions of stopping there. Her immediate plans are to enthral the European and global audiences with the musical material making up her reportoire. The high quality and stylish sound, melodies performed in the best traditions of soul, funk, and pop-rock, as well as the wonderful lyrics. And, at the same time, there is the strong and tender, enchanting and unique voice of Ani Lorak.

Ani Lorak was chosen by Ukrainian broadcaster NTU to represent the country at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. In February, a five song national selection was held where the Philip Kirkorov/Karen Kavaleryan song Shady Lady emerged victorious.| < Prev | Next > |
